Lack of Sleep Nearly Doubles Risk of Peripheral Artery Disease

Sleeping less than 5 hours each night has been associated with a 74% greater risk of developing peripheral artery disease (PAD), some recent research has found. This is compared to the recommended amount of 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

PAD is a condition in which arteries in the legs become clogged, which restricts blood flow and increases the risk for a heart attack or stroke. The main cause is a buildup of fatty deposits and calcium in artery walls, which is known as atherosclerosis.

The study was a large one involving over 650,000 participants. Researchers collected data on sleep duration as well as daytime napping habits from each participant. Though lack of sleep showed the biggest link to PAD, sleeping 8 or more hours per night was also associated with a 24% increased risk.

One drawback to the study was that it could not determine with certainty whether sleep was a cause or effect of PAD. As study author Dr. Shuai Yuan commented, “The results indicate that brief night-time sleep can raise the chance of developing PAD, and that having PAD increases the risk of getting insufficient sleep.”

Menopausal Hormone Therapy Linked to Greater Dementia Risk

Women who use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal symptoms may be at a higher risk for dementia, according to a new study. Overall, researchers determined a 24% increased risk for both all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study used data spanning 18 years from a group of 5,589 women with dementia and a control group of nearly 56,000 women with no dementia diagnosis. Researchers specifically analyzed the use of estrogen-progestin (combination) therapy to determine if there was a link to dementia.

Not only did they find an association between HRT and higher dementia incidence, they also noted that longer use of HRT corresponded to an increasingly greater risk of dementia— up to 74% for 12 years of use or longer.

The study did have its limitations because it was observational only. However, it does confirm the results of another recent study showing that HRT may be connected to certain markers of Alzheimer’s in the brain and suggests that more studies and some caution are needed where the effects of HRT are concerned.
